Navigating the Balance: President Biden on Free Speech, Legal Order, and Campus Protests

Washington, D.C. – President Biden made an impromptu address this morning before departing to North Carolina, focusing on the escalating tensions on college campuses across the United States.

During his address, the President highlighted the recent unsettling images emanating from college campuses, spotlighting the challenge they present to fundamental American values. “We’ve all seen the images. And they put to the test two fundamental American principles,” he stated, urging for a balance between the right to free speech and the rule of law.

Despite a brief interruption due to a cough, President Biden passionately defended the right to peaceful protest as a cornerstone of American democracy, distinguishing it sharply from acts of violence and vandalism. “Peaceful protest in America — violent protest is not protected; peaceful protest is. It’s against the law when violence occurs,” Biden clarified, condemning vandalism, trespassing, and intimidation tactics as unlawful and un-American.

The President also addressed the issue of campus safety and the right to education, asserting that “People have the right to get an education, the right to get a degree, the right to walk across the campus safely without fear of being attacked.” Moreover, he took a firm stance against discrimination and hate speech, including antisemitism, Islamophobia, or any form of violence against students or groups.

“There is no place for racism in America. It’s all wrong. It’s un-American,” the President declared, emphasizing the importance of expressing convictions peacefully and within the law.

In response to questions from the press, President Biden confirmed that the current protests had not led him to reconsider any policies regarding the issue at hand. Additionally, when asked if the National Guard should intervene, the President responded with a definitive “No.”

President Biden closed his remarks by reiterating his commitment to defending free speech and upholding the rule of law, assuring the American people of his dedication to their safety and the principles of the Constitution.

The address comes at a pivotal moment for the nation, as the administration seeks to navigate the complexities of free expression and public safety on college campuses.

The White House has promised to keep the public informed on how the Biden administration intends to support the American people and encourages citizens to get involved and contribute to the nation’s progress.
